Depression

Depression is characterised by:

– Depressed mood,
– Loss of appetite,
– Diminished interest in enjoyment of activities,
– Sleeplessness or hyposomnia (sleeping alot),
– Psychomotor agitation or retardation,
– Lack of energy,
– Social withdrawal,
– Suicidal thoughts and/or gestures,
– Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or inappropriate guilt,
– Low self esteem,
– Unresolved grief issues,
– Mood related hallucinations or delusions,
– History of chronic or recurrent depression for which the client has taken anti-depressant medication, been hospitalised, or had outpatient treatment.

(Jongsma, 2006)

Not all people experience all of these symptoms.

Depression however, has the effect of depleting our enjoyment of life and relationships.

Winston Churchill described his depression as a ‘black dog’ who would follow him around at times, like an unwelcome passenger.

Depression can cause us to want to isolate ourselves, but know that you are not alone and that there is help available.
